Lighting Fundamentals | Section 1a | Light and Vision | Contrast

Contrast

The difference between the luminance of an object and that of its background is called contrast. Black letters on white paper are easy to read because the contrast approaches 100%. But grey lettering with only 40% reflectance on grey paper of 80% reflectance will have a contrast of only 50% and be hard to see. The visibility of a low contrast object can be increased by adding illumination or the use of color.
