The difference between the
luminance of an object and
that of its background is
called contrast. Black
letters on white paper are
easy to read because the
contrast
approaches 100%. But grey
lettering with only 40%
reflectance on grey paper of
80% reflectance will have a
contrast of only 50% and be
hard to see. The visibility
of a low contrast object can
be increased by adding
illumination or the use of
color.
